I'll go first.
I download anime because I don't have a job and my allowance pays for both the Internet and for Netflix.
(I do still buy anime, but I wait for super cheap deals, like those S.A.V.E. Box Sets from FUNimation)

Why Do You Download Anime?

Because I enjoy watching it, and most series aren't licensed in my country. I don't have enough money to pay for a CrunchyRoll subscription at the moment.
Also, I download (or did until my computer broke) anime to convert it to avi for other people.
I buy the DVDs of series that I enjoy, if they're licensed in the UK, and available at a decent price.

Cause I don't think i should have to pay outrageous prices for anime dvds and blu-rays before even watching the show to know if i like it.

For the enjoyment that anime brings, so I can find out more about anime and become better versed in what kinds I would like, and so I know if I like an anime to spend my precious bucketloads of money on 4 episodes of a series... anime is very expensive. Also some of it isn't licensed here, or I have no clue where on earth to find it.
Actually, the only nearby supplier of anime closed down about a week ago... the gamesmen were amazing, and now they're gone... A tribute:

It's an ethical dilemma for BOTH sides, not just the downloaders. You see, anime tends to be overpriced and there's no use denying it. If Funimation and the other studios would make it fair/cheaper then I'm sure more people would buy. Those of us interested in the anime/manga business aren't generally going to be successful career men/women with money just sitting in our pockets.... we're students, part timers at the local ninety-nine, hamburger flippers, still living in our mother's basement, having to pay our way through college, etc. type of people just to name a few of the catagories some of my friends and I fall into. Hayao Miyazaki films are NOTORIOUSLY OVER PRICED. For example, Borders sells his DVDs for almost 30 USD. But he's also the only animator I respect so much that I would NEVER EVER download for free.... it'd be sacriledge in my mind.

Hmmm.... fansubs can be pretty cool.... very unorthodox ways of translating sometimes, but that's what makes it enjoyable right? Anyway, you're from England right? In terms of anime the ones that are licensed: do they have UK actors or are they the American voice dubs? I've always wanted to know..... ^^" Actually I think you're in the best position ever.... you have a better reason to download than anyone in the US (particularly NY/CA) since they don't license a lot in England. Getting caught is every anime lover's worst nightmare here in the states. But like I said if they just didn't overprice everything then I'd be buying more often than not XD

We get the US dubs, if we get anything at all. Sometimes the DVD releases are just plain shoddy though. We sometimes also miss out on extra features that the American market gets.
I don't think I have a better excuse, I'd be happy to buy series that I've watched if only they were released here. Pity there's the R1/R2 difference between the UK and the USA, otherwise I'd just import DVDs.

I download because:
1) As already stated, Anime is relatively expensive.
2) Some series air on TV, so I could watch it there for the same price. The computer is just more convient.
3) Download quality is better than streaming, plus no waiting to buffer.

I've always downloaded anime to get at what's new, especially in regards to series that either take a long time or never get domestically licensed. If I really like it, I'll definitely buy it. I think you guys (stateside) are lucky that companies like Funi are putting out half or full season boxsets well within double-digit dollars, not like during the earlier 2000's when some companies released single discs for easily 20-30 USD (for 3-4 episodes). But I know income for the general demographic (as cheshire mentioned) is tenuous, at best; heck, it was the same for me until a bit more recently. But I still carefully pick and choose what I do buy and use fansubs as a preview. *looks over at newly bought copies of Evangelion 2.22 and Baccano

I wasn't implying that you wouldn't buy them.... I do buy them if they're licensed... but what I meant to say is that it looks better when someone whose country doesn't license that many series is actually downloading only the ones that aren't licensed whereas someone from lets say the States is only downloading to preview a series before taking the intial steps to purchasing it and can't just say, "Well I'm going to buy them once my paycheck comes in" sort of thing

I download because my country doesn't have a store wherein you can buy original anime dvd, my cable has no anime channel and the anime is not up to date, its hard to watch in streaming sites, I have a busy schedule so I don't have time to watch tv, I only make some effort in buying anime online if the anime is really worth my money because I don't want to waste it for some not so good storyline anime, I really like fansubbed anime because they really made an effort to translate it appropriately unlike the original releases, they make changes so the true essence of the conversation can alter and differ from the original conversation in an anime, this is so true.

There really isn't anything I have to say that hasn't been said.
I don't want to buy an anime series if I've never tried it before. You have no idea how many anime series I've dropped because I've lost interest part way through. Now imagine wasting money on buying those DVDs instead.

When companies put more effort into dubs, I'll use my hard-earned cash to buy it. But until then, I'm DLing. xDD A lot of good anime never makes it to the U.S. Also, I'm picky on subs, so...The official ones always tick me off. >___<
